I remember when Alex Smith was universally considered a bust. Now there are those who say he's under-appreciated.

I dont want to put you out of your comfort zone by suggesting things might change over time, but maybe he has improved his play over the years.

Let's circle back to the Dolphins giving a 34-year-old recovering from a ruptured Achilles $10M in guaranteed money.

Good. Then we realize that same 34 year old was already making 9.8 millions and we come to the conclusion we are talking about nothing

There's no need to be a putz. Alex Smith has improved, but that doesn't mean he's "severely underappreciated." He's an average NFL quarterback. He puts up average stats and gets paid average money.

This isn't remotely the case.

his salary for this season was 9.8 million on the last season of his contract, so by adding 200k guaranteed they have another season of veteran leadership.

It's not that simple.

His 2016 salary wasn't guaranteed. Now it is. They guaranteed his salary and lowered his cap hit a grand total of $1.3M. They also guaranteed $3M of his 2017 salary, which will result in dead money if they decide to cut the guy who will be 35 and one year removed from a catastrophic injury.

The Dolphins are now on the hook for guaranteed $11.4M when they were previously on the hook for a guaranteed $1.4M, for a guy who's best season was four years ago.

Andy Dalton 255/386 66.1% 3250yrds 8.4ptt 250.0ypg 25td 7int 1471st
Alex Smith 307/470 65.3% 3486yrds 7.4ptt 217.9ypg 20td 7int 1541st

From here onwards, this is the stuff media and commentators don't care about...

Also Smith's rushing 84att 498yrds 5.2avg 2td 301st

Add Alex Smiths 4 fumbles for zero losses. Can Newton had 5 fumbles and 4 losses for a comparison.

Smith had 184 of the teams 303 1st downs. 60.7%?

Yes Smith puts up middle of the pack passing numbers. But whom would with 1.5 recievers to pass it to? Its the other stuff he does so well. Very little turnovers. And also the amount of 1st downs using his feet.
