Interesting data, your season 16 was more than half starters, but season 17 was very kind. I was suggesting something simple that would cause such high numbers of starters vs backups on a roster of my size (always 60-70 players). Complete randomness would make me very unlucky, but certainly still possible. Weeks at club could be a factor. Only players with 100% team chemistry could be a factor as all of my injuries this year were to players with full team chemistry. Realistically, I think it's just maybe 4 rolls, injury (yes/no), weeks at club (just as an example - under 20, 20 or over), select player from that group, duration of injury. I can't recall having an injury for any new player I've either bought or selected from youth center. New teams already have players at 30 weeks or so on the team, so that kind of roll would apply to them just as easily.
I doubt it would be "prone to injury", because I think many more managers would experience the same player getting injured and I've never had the same player injured. Something like this really should be clarified by the admins, since I don't see why it would hurt to know how a player is selected? Is it completely random or is there other criteria used to sort who stubbed their toe this week?

It would be good if the admins just told us if it's random or if there some other criteria, but sadly i'm pretty sure they never will. I'm going to continue to track my injuries and i'm sure you will too, so maybe at some point we'll be able to work out a definitive answer. We probably don't have enough data at the moment.
In S16, I had 6 starters injured out of 11 injuries. The other 5 were 2 backups and 3 youths but I guess these two categories could be combined anyway If they were then it's almost a 50/50 split. This season all my injuries have been backups/youth while the majority of your injuries have been to starters (6 out of 8). This could just be attributed to randomness, as in i've been lucky this season and you've been unlucky.
Also my roster size in S16 was around mid 60's to 70 and this season has been around low 60's for most of the season, i've cut it down a bit in the last few weeks.
I still don't think there is anything definitive to suggest that age or weeks at club are related to injuries. Another factor that I guess possibly could be used is the game stats. The stats are recorded for league and cup games, including games played so if there is a correlation between starters and injuries then I suppose this information could be used, but again I think this is a bit too advanced for the game.
I can go back and capture injuries for past seasons, not sure how far back I can go, but I will capture what I can. The more useful thing to capture going forward is exact info on player when injury occurs, that will be near impossible to capture going back in time. The more managers that do this, the more valid the data will be. Should be interesting to see how it goes

I think it's completely random who gets injured. Having bad luck with your injuries being mainly to starters wouldn't be impossible. You seem to have extremely good luck drawing high talent youth pulls. I'm not suggesting they happen this way to balance things out for you, but you do already seem to experience an extreme of the randomness on the good side in one aspect. It shouldn't be a surprise that the extreme randomness can also go to the bad side for some.
I haven't tracked my injuries, and I could be wrong in this, but I'm thinking I've had a new player get injured before. Most likely one I purchased as I've not kept many youth pulls over the years. Again, I could be mistaken here.
Roster size the same of around 50 +/- 3 at any one time.

One of my starting WR and a starting DT have called in sick. Both with 10+ days recovery.
It will cost me ~ 200k $ to hire Docs, so they both are available at the first game of the season. I will fire the docs after that.
I want to win the Division this Season!
Is 200k worth having 1 key and 1 other starting player fit at season start?
Yes, definitely.

All depends in whom is your opponent in the first round.

It was a bot, so in hindsight, thats 200k wasted. But I'd do it again anytime.

Considering the signing fee you gotta pay. Hopefully not for another 5 weeks.
