Indeed it will! But much more fun than a group with bot formations etc.

On a different note, we have now watched the game tape, and one of our assistant coaches had this to say:

"France are what we thought they were. They're what we thought they were. We scouted them well but... — who the hell takes the first game of the qualifying rounds like it's bullshit? Bullshit! We played them in the first game of this group play — everybody played four quarters — France are who we thought they were! That's why we took the damn field. Now if you want to crown them, then crown their ass! But they are who we thought they were! And we let 'em off the hook!"

Norway vs. Australia pregame report

Today Norway will face Australia in our first home game. In this pregame report we'll give some insight into what to expect from our team, and what we expect to face from the Australian national team. Both teams lost their opening day matches last week, and will be eager to redeem themselves this week.

Norway starting lineups:
Offense
LT: Hans Heiberg
LG: Levi Martinsen
C: Roger Viken
RG: Mattias Alnæs
RT: Christer Hægeland
X (LWR): Isac Mandelid
Y (LTE): Ronny Fjellanger
Z (RWR): Sondre Herland
QB: Nils Wiken
2 (RTE): Joakim Mydland
3 (HB): Johan Vike

Defense
LDE: Arild Krane
LDT: Karsten Hvattum
RDT: Mons Flo
RDE: Kristian Langø
LOLB: Oskar Nordhagen
MLB: Gaute Nguyen
ROLB: Sven Høyvik
LCB: Leif Halvorsrud
SS: Aleksander Dammen
FS: Syver Rong
RCB: Oliver Bævre

When Norway has the ball:
Norway will play a balanced ace double tight formation today:
-----------------------------------LOS------------------------------------
----WR------------TE---LT---LG--C--RG---RT---TE------------WR----
------------------------------------QB-------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------HB-------------------------------------

We will again focus on the passing game, but mix in the running game just like last week. In our away game versus Team France, we learned that we can indeed run the ball, and we plan to do a bit of that today too.
We expect to see the same kind of defense from the Australians as we saw from the French, which is best described as an inverted umbrella defense. Australia will probably change from playing a DT-NT-DT front to a DE-NT-DE front. There is also the possibility that they change to an actual umbrella (SS-FS-SS), or even a 3-4. Whatever the opposing defense tries to do, our challenge will be to improve our passing percentage from the first game’s 43% to 50% or better, in addition to not ending drives on interceptions, which happened twice last week. Changes in personell from last week include at QB where Nils Wiken comes in for Truls Rødsjø, and Christer Hægeland stepping in at RT instead of Knut Fuglestad.

When Australia has the ball:
Norway will play a 4-3 defense today:
-----------------------------------LOS------------------------------------
-----------------------RDE---RDT----LDT---LDE------------------------
------RCB---------ROLB--------MLB--------LOLB-----------LCB------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------SF---------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------SF---------------------------------------

We want to create more pressure than we did against France a week ago. Although our DE Arild Krane did get a lot of QB pressures, we must have at least a couple of sacks and more pressure from other players too if we are to be successful.
Australia will probably attack us with a balanced ace formation, with 1 WR/1 TE on each side. It will be all about the passing game, especially if they’re looking at our 5-3 from last week and thinking of it as a real-life 5-3. This is G-I, so it works somewhat different from a passing perspective. An important factor is whether we can avoid allowing the 52%+ completion percentage Australia enjoyed against the UK last week.
With the change from a 5-3 to a 4-3, DT Zakaria Selvik leaves the field in favor of SF Syver Rong.

Special teams:
Our punting was a disappointment last week, as was our return game. Our return coverage was pretty good with a few exceptions on kickoff return – but that’s the G-I engine balancing the game more than anything else. Our kicker did what he was expected to do. The punt team will get a second chance, but Yoshikatsu Helgerud will replace Tod Monteiro as one of the two returners. In addition, Torje Østerhus comes in at STCB instead of Haris Girardey.

Coaches’ comments:
We’ve put last week’s disappointment behind us, and are totally focused on today’s game. It is truly a must-win game. We respect the Australian team, and recognize that their offense is potentially lethal. After all, they scored 24 points last week and their QB posted a rating of above 100. We need to address that, and in particular put pressure on the QB. Offensively, we need to get going. Last week gave us some answers as to what we can do, but at the same time there’s some important adjustments that need to be done if we are to win today. The QB situation is a dilemma for us. Wiken will get the opportunity today, but to be honest we are very comfortable with either QB leading our offense.

Good luck to all nations playing today!

Kind regards,

Team Norway

Norway vs. Australia postgame report

Final score: 28 – 21
Titan Bowl
Attendance: 101.000

Recap:
Once again history was written, as Norway got it’s first ever win. With France’s victory over the United Kingdom in the other game in Group A, Norway are now 1-1 and in 3rd place behind the United Kingdom due to the points differential.
Australia took the early lead in the game, but couldn’t hold on as the lead changed and was held by Norway as the final whistle blew. The game was wide open until the end of the 4th quarter, as both teams proved to have a dangerous passing game.
Norway’s goal of putting pressure on the Australian QB did not meet expectations, but the coverage was much better today than a week ago at France – resulting in two interceptions and fewer completions for the Aussies than they experienced in their first game. Offensively the Norwegian side managed to gain yards more consistently than in their last game. There were also fewer turnovers, and turnovers killed Team Norway last week. Team Australia is now at 0-2, and next up is an unbeaten French team that are in 1st position of Group A. Team Norway faces a United Kingdom side looking to take out their frustration over a 1-1 record on someone. Norway will obviously be hoping to play the David part in the David vs. Goliath story one week from today.

Stars of the game:
Offensive MVP Team Norway: QB Nils Wiken
Defensive MVP Team Norway: LB Gaute Nguyen
Special Teams MVP Team Norway: G Rubinho Toustou
Offensive MVP Team Australia: LT Cleve Jordan
Defensive MVP Team Australia: DE Danny Daniher
Special Teams MVP Team Australia: KR Claude Giansiracusa

Coaches’ comments:
A loss today would have all but drowned our hopes of a place in the World Cup, so it’s no understatement that this was a massive win for us. We had scouted our opponent well enough to know that they are a capable team, but with slightly less talent than us. We knew that we could win if we accomplished the goals we set before the game, and that is to a certain extent what happened. We did not get as much pressure on the QB as hoped, but still enough to help cause less completions, and most importantly: Two interceptions. Offensively we managed to increase our passing completion percentage substantially, and eradicate the turnovers that plagued us in the game at France.
Next up is the United Kingdom, who despite also being at 1-1 are by far the favorites in that matchup. That means we have nothing to lose, and a win for us would definitely put us in the driver’s seat for a World Cup spot. I am sure the UK manager will take us seriously, so it will be no easy feat for us to win that game. Nonetheless; we’ll be on the field, and we will be ready.

Kind regards,

Team Norway

I'll be offline serving the country Tuesday-Friday (very convenient), so it will be interesting to see if Norway has a bot offense or defense in Friday's game... Hopefully not!

The pregame report (which has been written) will either be published by a friend of mine Friday, or maaaaybe by me Friday evening together with the postgame report.

In other words: Good luck to everyone this coming round!
