Press Release 2010.09.06

Norway ready for World Cup competition
It's about time to release some info on our national team in this forum, as the deadline for call-ups is getting close. In this post we'll focus on the work that has been done up until this point. This has been a community effort, and there are many involved that deserve credit.

The Norwegian national team scouting staff:
smurphet, Domers55, Plexface, Alekks, Krinor, Joakim91

Every Norwegian manager got a couple of PMs asking for their assistance in gathering the team. The ones mentioned above (they are actually 50% of the Norwegian managers currently active in G-I) are the ones that helped out gathering extra info in addition to stats of their own players. I would like to thank them all for their brilliant assistance in putting together a -hopefully- competitive team for our first National team campaign. Hopefully we can qualify for the World Championship by being one of the top two teams in Group A!

I'd also like to give a huge thumbs up ( ) to those who gave us info on their players, either after being contacted or by contacting us:

Kjeldgaard, Serrie, Iman24, Tackle79, Snibbler, Patryczek1993, Jacka, Goodbuy, McFire, Rollymaster, Foctur, Spineless, Neba12, Milosh, Muerresny84, ROVERBOY, GitHyper, Celt67, Mrvica, Zeb123, Rossib, Manning18, Kaibo, Arielo, alexeipo, Otaner, darkos, semroal, Rasmus With, Curro, poudos, Ikearegal, skorpion, alfanti, taytay, daveegan06, Delfino81, Saint24, Storm, domers35, Guard65, Asdiner, Ghinao, sk8tildeath, Edi69, alesere, falch, Triple_C and oleksa

Not all of you will see your players in the Norwegian national team, but your help has been invaluable nonetheless!
Hopefully I didn't forget anyone

Norway has very few managers in the game, and it's been great that almost everyone has been sharing info and making sure we have a good national team. Of the many non-Norwegian teams that got PMs, a vast majority responded: Great to see the community get so involved!

Now what?
- Tomorrow we will call up the 50 that made the team. There will also be a press release Wednesday going into detail about the team chosen.
- The managers whose players get chosen, will get a PM announcing this (why wait for a call-up info function that isn’t there?). This will happen within a few days, depending on when there's time
- Friday the world cup qualifying group play starts, and we have our first game away vs. France.

Good luck to everyone!

Kind regards,

JM Henriksen
PS! Not every team with a Norwegian player got a PM, as we had scouted some potential national team players before national team managers were announced.Last edited on 2010-09-10 at 13:22

Press Release 2010.09.08

Presentation of the Norwegian national team roster:

General coaches' comment: After researching info on approximately 1.000 players, and looking in depth at around 300, we finally arrived at the players mentioned here. Some may be surprised that there are top $-players missing, but we had certain criterias that all players had to meet, and not all did. We also wanted to avoid so-called one skill wonders in most cases. A CB with one skill at 18 may have a salary of 65.000+, but a CB with a salary of 10.000 may be better suited for what we want to see from our CBs. Another noticeable thing is the amount of players from bot teams. This may be debated, as many believe in the national teams as a community thing. So do we, but not at the expense of losing every game 80-0. We’ve looked for a mix of the community aspect with what gives us a competitive team. Time will tell if we’ve succeeded or not. It’ll be fun anyways, which is also the intention of writing this crap!

Quarterbacks
QB Nils Wiken, Heimdal Heroes
QB Truls Rødsjø, Kristiansand Sharks

Coaches' comment: Wiken was a given considering his passing skills and pedigree. Rødsjø was somewhat of a surprise, and beat out quality passers such as Kristian Ekstrøm, Adam Berggren, Nikolas Hals and Benjamin Fagermo due to being a better allround player. We'll go into the qualifying rounds with just two QBs as one of them is from a bot team. Bot teams don't have training updates, thus we won’t have both QBs potentially injured at the same time...

Runningbacks
RB Johan Vike, Heimdal Heroes
RB Anton Hellevik, AFC Show
RB Kaspar Tangstad, Sandnes Oilers
RB Philip Malvik, Kroppanmarka viking’s

Coaches' comment: Not our strongest position, but a versatile group skills wise. We decided not to bring in our best blocking FB, Pål Tørstad, nor some of our highest paid RBs like Asle Rossebø , but rather focus more on players that can contribute with other skillsets.

Receivers
WR Ali Ellingsen, Heimdal Heroes
WR Isac Mandelid, Heimdal Heroes
WR Sondre Herland, Heimdal Heroes
WR Krister Haugnes, The New Age Philosophers
WR Hans Rashid, Louisville Mud Dogs
TE Ronny Fjellanger, Heimdal Heroes
TE Joakim Mydland, Sparta Nijkerk
TE Josef Vedvik, Wilhelmshaven Wolves

Coaches' comment: A very strong group. Wideouts with 19 in catching were omitted, which tells you something. It will be a challenge for us to choose who'll start and who'll ride the bench. With the exception of Fjellanger, the TEs chosen were not the most highly paid out there, but once again we chose based on more than just one skill, as we want players that can contribute in different ways.

Offensive Line
OL Hans Heiberg, Heimdal Heroes
OL Levi Martinsen, Orange County Lakers
OL Mattias Alnæs, Rotterdam Bashers
OL Roger Viken, Badgers
OL Christer Hægeland, Kristiansand Sharks
OL Knut Fuglestad, Heimdal Heroes
OL Ole-Martin Nyseth, Heimdal Heroes

Coaches' comment: Some notable names are lacking, including some very highly paid players, but one of the criteria for playing on our team is a rating of at least 3,5 stars. That leaves out some benchwarmers with blocking skills of 17-18, but we think it's the right decision to make. There are three players with Top Division experience in this group, including a couple with AFLC on their resumé.

Defensive Line
DL Zakaria Selvik, AFC Show
DL Marcus Fanebust, X-treme
DL Karsten Hvattum, Crvena zvezda
DL Mons Flo, New York Giants Wannabies
DL Arild Krane, Heimdal Heroes
DL Kristian Langø, Kristiansand Sharks

Coaches' comment: A solid but not spectacular unit. A combo of speed, strength and a traditional skillset for DL should mean this group do what they're supposed to do.

Linebackers
LB Sven Høyvik, Orange County Lakers
LB Børge Wahl, Sandnes Oilers
LB Gaute Nguyen, Tombosze
LB Abel Gudmundsen, Tombosze
LB Oskar Nordhagen, Ranheim Ravens
LB Remy Aune, Heimdal Heroes

Coaches' comment: Led by Gaute Nguyen, this is perhaps the strength of the defense. We've called up six players for this unit just like with the D-line to make sure we can play several different fronts. Aune is the only player to make the team despite having a positional rating of less than 3,5 stars.

Defensive Backs
CB Torje Østerhus, Sandnes Oilers
CB Oliver Bævre, Heimdal Heroes
CB Leif Halvorsrud, Ranheim Ravens
SF Aleksander Dammen, Heimdal Heroes
SF Samuel Oftedal, Crvena zvezda
SF Syver Rong, Kroppanmarka viking’s

Coaches' comment: This unit will be heavily tested by opposing teams, as a lot of passing can be expected - this is not Division V. We've spent some time finding players with skills that we believe will make a difference. Whether we're on the money or not; well - that is something we'll surely find out.

Specialists
K Bendik Skagestad, The New Age Philosophers
P Tristan Grønning, Danish Generals
K/P Edvard Bjorøy, Klæbu MeanMachines
G Rubinho Toustou, The New Age Philosophers
G Leon Nicaise, Heimdal Heroes
G Christopher Louchart, Crvena zvezda
STCB Kristoffer Buer, The New Age Philosophers
STCB Haris Girardey, Crvena zvezda
KR Shayne Hansen, The New Age Philosophers
KR Tod Monteiro, Klæbu MeanMachines
KR Yoshikatsu Helgerud, Heimdal Heroes

Coaches' comment: It was important for Norway to find a solid set of special teams' players, and we think we've found them. Many of the players here can also double at other positions, but they've been picked because of their skillset for special teams.

Practice Squad
QB Benjamin Fagermo, New York Giants Wannabies
RB Tommy Sveberg, FC PaNtHeRs
WR Pelle Helvik, Kroppanmarka viking’s
TE Magnar Hussein, Sandnes Oilers
OL Casper Kausar, Sandnes Oilers
DL Anas Bru, Kristiansand Sharks
LB Adam Heen, X-treme
CB Bo Grødem, Kattem Maulers
SF Teo Bredesen, Anzbach Vikings
K/P Karl Østli, Resevoir Dogs FC
G Abel Fuglerud, Kroppanmarka viking’s
STCB Tristan Oppegård, Семаргл (Чехов)
KR Merlin Stąpór , Kungshall Cobras

Coaches' comment: The practice squad was originally picked because we wanted to call up 46 players and have 4 positions available for later call ups in case of injury. However, it seems G-I management will close call ups after the 8th of September, meaning that this is not an option. We still wanted to mention the practice squad, as a list of players that almost made the team, but didn't quite make it after all

Kind regards,

Team Norway

Norway @ France pregame report

Today Norway will face France for the team's first ever game. In this pregame report we'll give some insight into what to expect from our team, and what we expect to face from France and their excellent manager, Yaya_4.

Norway starting lineups:
Offense
LT: Hans Heiberg
LG: Levi Martinsen
C: Roger Viken
RG: Mattias Alnæs
RT: Knut Fuglestad
X (LWR): Isac Mandelid
Y (LTE): Ronny Fjellanger
Z (RWR): Sondre Herland
QB: Truls Rødsjø
2 (RTE): Joakim Mydland
3 (HB): Johan Vike

Defense
LDE: Arild Krane
LDT: Karsten Hvattum
NT: Mons Flo
RDT: Zakaria Selvik
RDE: Kristian Langø
LOLB: Oskar Nordhagen
MLB: Gaute Nguyen
ROLB: Sven Høyvik
LCB: Leif Halvorsrud
SF: Aleksander Dammen
RCB: Oliver Bævre

When Norway has the ball:
Norway will play a balanced ace double tight formation today:
-----------------------------------LOS------------------------------------
WR----------------TE---LT---LG--C--RG---RT---TE----------------WR
------------------------------------QB-------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------HB-------------------------------------

We will focus on the passing game, but mix in the running game as well. It is important for us to test both aspects early in the qualification to figure out what a team such as ours can do/can't do at this level.
We expect to see a 4-3 or potentially 3-3-5 (Nickel) from the French. If they show up in a Nickel defense, they'll have a FS/L, SS and FS/R in the secondary, with a NT replacing the two DTs in the box. In other words: No nickelback in their Nickel defense; looks more like an invert umbrella defense on a very windy day. We believe we can get on the scoreboard multiple times vs. any defensive formation, including the ones mentioned.

When France has the ball:
Norway will play a 5-3 defense today:
--------------------------------LOS---------------------------------------
-----------------RDE---RDT---NT---LDT---LDE-------------------------
----RCB-----------ROLB-----MLB-----LOLB--------------LCB----------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------SF-----------------------------------------

We want to minimize mistakes. If the defense can keep France from being explosive, we believe most of their drives will stall, which should keep the score from getting out of hand.
We expect the French offense to be very pass oriented. They'll show up in a traditional I-formation or a balanced single-back formation (either double tight like ours or 1 WR/1 TE on one side and 2 WRs on the other side), and will want to test our pass coverage early and often.

Special teams:
This is G-I, not real life. Basically the losing side will have the highest average on returns, and the winning side won't. The French have a solid kicker, but ours is half-decent too.

Coaches’ comments:
It’s the first game of the competition for us, and that in itself makes it a very important matchup. UK’s 56-24 win against the Aussies earlier this morning means the team that wins this game will be in good shape for finishing in the top two of the qualifying group. There’s no doubt we’ll get on the scoreboard, and there’s no doubt they’ll get on the scoreboard – we’re really focused on having a well-functioning defense today. If we can minimize their big plays, which they certainly have the potential for having a lot of, we will put ourselves in a good situation. We’ll start Rødsjø at QB, which I’m sure surprises some. But Wiken flunked on the Wonderlic, and we want somebody in the pocket that can make sound decisions without having the offensive coordinator in their ear telling them what to do. Rødsjø gives us that.

Good luck to all nations playing today!

Kind regards,

Team Norway

Norway @ France postgame report

Final score: 10 – 17
Yaya’s Stadium
Attendance: 123.382

Recap:
In a historic battle, the Norwegian underdogs lost the war despite a solid effort. Team France took a very important win, proving that they can compete at this level.
France struck first, but Norway answered shortly after in what proved to be an evenly fought matchup from the start of the 1st quarter until the very end of the 4th quarter. The passing game was -not surprisingly- more dominant than the running game, although Norway did have the occasional 1st down thanks to their decision to give some attention to the ground game too. Frances’s pass-oriented attack proved too powerful for the Norwegians in the long run however, and Team France now has a highly desired 1-0 record to start their journey towards the World Cup. Although it will probably be possible to go through to the World Cup with a 3-3 record in Group A, it would most certainly be undesireable for both teams to fight an uphill battle from the start of the qualification onwards. That is the challenge now facing Norway.

Stars of the game:
Offensive MVP Team Norway: LT Hans Heiberg
Defensive MVP Team Norway: CB Leif Halvorsrud
Special Teams MVP Team Norway: K Bendik Skagestad
Offensive MVP Team France: TE Aodren Lucchesi
Defensive MVP Team France: SS Cyrille Duran
Special Teams MVP Team France: P Samuel Chanson

Coaches’ comments:
We went into the game fully expecting to be able to compete and perhaps even win this game. It was very important to keep our World Cup hopes alive. That hope is still alive, but the road is much more difficult. Turnovers killed us today, and we can’t have those if we are going to win any game in this tournament. We also need to have better pressure from our defense. 0 sacks on 53 pass attempts is simply inexcusable. Now our focus shifts towards Australia who we are facing next week. They played a very tough and explosive British side today, and will surely aim for their first win of the tournament when they meet us. We will prepare well, so it won’t be an easy task for them. I am sure they’ll prepare well too, so it won’t be easy for us either – but we will give it our best shot.

Kind regards,

Team Norway
