Each position (QB, RB, OL...) has a "rating" associated with it.

Does this rating depend on the skills?

No. Skills can be trained, rating must be learned on the pitch.

On player profile screen, the highest rating (so his natural position) is shown. This positional rating can only be changed by playing the matches on the desired position. When the rating you are "building up" is equal or higher than the current highest rating, the player will "switch" his natural position.

So we can assume that the natural position is always his best position?
If this is true, why would we ever consider to put him on another position?

If injuries hit both of your QBs (if you have two of course) or any other position you do not have enough cover for?
Or another example: you just bought a great player whos natural at QB but also adequate as a RB. His skills are twice the skills of your other players and you have good QB but lousy RB. You could play this new guy at RB and because he is so much better then the others, the RB rating loss would not hit him so hard and he would be much better at RB than your "natural" but lousy RB
It's only an option, so you use it either when needed or to re-train the player to some other position you need.

I completely understand the second part, thanks to your examples, but not yet the first part

How comes there is already a natural position, if there never have been a game before?

Newly created players get some random (quite low though) "ratings" on all their positions and the highest one decides what his starting natural position is. It's really not complicated. It wouldn't make sense to start players with all 1's on ratings as it wouldn't be to start them on all 1's on their skills

Still not all clear

If you have a player with 20 on kicking and 0 on the other skills (hypothetically), so he would be a more than excellent kicker, but you never let him play as a kicker, will his natural position be a kicker or not?

He would be kicker (by profession) until that player would reach 20 in some other rating (if you would play him as RB for example). After this happens, kicking rating would be lowered to 19 and the other skill (RB in this case) to 20 and thus, his natural position would change to RB.

I understand that a player should learn a position only by playing it.

But what are the consequences of playing him out of position (not his natural position). Will his match performance be less? (like 10% less for a position he can play adequately, 20% less for a position he can play if really needed, and 30% less for all other positions)

If so, good. If not, why even have those positions listed...cause there are no consequences for playing him in different positions?

How good a player plays on a certain position depends on his rating in that position. So if the rating is for example only 1 lower than what he has on his natural position then there will be almost no noticeable difference. But if his rating is something like 10 lower then you will most definitely notice it.

Now at the start there is no big difference between the players positions since they are all more or less clueless. Right now they are at the "rank" of amateur. They need to be trained (and played) in their positions (or in some other position if you want to convert them) to start developing and becoming good at what they do.
