Ok so the talent star rating is one of the most important things to start with for a national team player is that right Ab Cat?

The you can train the other areas that you stated?

That's my opinion. A player that can only get to 4.5* rating needs to be very good all round to have a chance - and below that it's not really an option.

I'd like to have another shot at it at some point but I know at present I wouldn't have the time to commit to it properly.

I'd like to see Cam or Itch take the job. Abcat, MrC or Ray would be great candidates as well but i'm not sure if they're interested.

I don't know really if it's a blessing or a curse that we have so many good managers who could take up the role, as I do wonder whether we would've added to the bulging trophy case in recent seasons if we'd consistently had the same manager for a few cycles in a row

I'm not sure a consistent manager would have made any difference. The main core of the players has been the same for many years and they've done well, but the UK is in a transitional period at the moment where a lot of the key names are on their way out and the replacements, whilst good, just aren't quite at that world beating level yet (the TE position, for example, is going to be much weaker once Leonard has to be dropped). That coupled with other teams hitting their stride in terms of player development (Italy, for example), means it's less of a walkover in the WC as it maybe used to be.

I did OK to get to where I did with them, but also think I could/should have gone further (didn't help that some div 3 French team hit 20 stamina on the best DE before the WC finals...), but I think next year will be a tough season for whoever takes the job.

My comments weren't meant to be a slight against any 1 cycle managers, after all I was a 1 cycle manager as was Rocky and he won it all, so I hope they didn't cause any offence.

My thoughts were that while a lot of UK mangers know of top players such as Leonard they don't know the skills for these players, so every cycle a new manager has to get to grips with the entire team again. Plus there is a very large pool of talent not in the team to consider as well. If the same manager continues then they already know the areas that need to be improved and the weaknesses from the previous cycle. For example, you know about that DL who was trained up to level 20 stam in the last cycle but a new manager might not spot that or consider it of that much importance. If a manager coached the NT for a few cycles they would have a better idea of how the NT players are trained by their owners and how they've been developed during the last cycle. I think this in turn would lead to a stronger NT in a time of flux when more and more UK NT regulars are ageing out of the NT.

There's always going to be a lot of competition for the job as it's a coveted role so it's rare that the same manager keeps the job for more than 1 cycle (I think MrC might be the only one who has). However, I do think that generally NT managers of smaller nations who continually coach the NT have a better overall understanding of their NT then 1 cycle NT managers.

Just my opinion though

No offense caused (at least to me anyway), was just adding my own initial thoughts to it all.

You may be right that a repeating manager could have a better idea of things in general. Maybe I should apply again then!

That's good to hear

And yeah my comments would support you for carrying on in the role

Are you reapplying?

It'll be interesting to see who the candidates are in the end, as at the moment I don't know who i'd give my vote to

I think Abcat has managed the team more than once but I think you're the only one who has done it in consecutive cycles. I might be wrong though

Another part that I think abcat is alluding to is that the LBs that the UK has to choose from are of a very high calibre and only the elite make the cut; there are probably plenty of players who are great in their own right, just not quite as good as some of the other options

That's my concern with my top LB (and the only UK starter on my team!).

Toby Blackburn

He's a 27 yr old 5* BPOS LB with 4.5* talent, 17 Int, 17 Con and 19 in Positioning, Vision, Tackling, Agility and Stamina. However, his speed is 16 and his strength is 17. He plays great for my team but I don't think he'll ever make the NT as there will always be other options with higher physicals.

It's a shame as he's working on upping his soft caps to 20 now, so I could see him getting to 20 in all relevant skills in the next few seasons. But it just shows the amount of quality in the UK NT selection pool.

I just remembered about Abcat's thread listing all the UK NT cycles.

http://www.grid-iron.org/community/viewt/16065/0

He was coach in seasons 12 & 14 and you were coach in seasons 15 & 16 (as well as season 8).

The only other manager who has coached the UK NT more than once was Monkey, who was coach in seasons 7 & 10.

But it looks like you were the only manager to coach the team consecutively. Although that doesn't lend a lot of weight to my previous comments as you won it all in season 15 and then failed to qualify in season 16 (after losing twice to New Zealand, hmm who was the NZ manager at the time ).

It will get company soon enough

Saying that, there cannot be many managers with a td title, a rc and a world cup title

A lot of people wanted me to stick around at the UKNT job after my two runs, but my thought has always been that we ought to encourage a lot of different managers to take the role, because of our embarrassment of riches in that regard.

Most certainly even fewer with all that and an Iron Bowl. Shame they don't let the WC managers prop a duplicate trophy on their club page. I would put that 3rd place trophy right next to my Iron Bowl
