Right, well I understand how offense works now, not being an NFL buff and being a recent fan (raiders are bad yet I support them lol) All I'd like to know is what is the difference between a 3-4 defence and 4-3 defence apart from the fact there are different players in different places...

No, thats about it (different players in different places)

a 4-3 has 4 defensive linemen/Defensive ends and 3 linebackers

a 3-4 had 3 defensive linemen/defensive ends and 4 linebackers

The 4-3 needs the defensive linemen to help out more with tackles and the linebackers to to be sure tacklers. Its a little better against the run and a little worse against the pass than a 3-4. The 4-3 was the standard defensive formation used by most of the NFL for quite some time.

The 3-4 needs large defensive linemen to occupy the offensive line so that the linebackers can make the bulk of the plays. It is a little better against the pass and a little worse against the run than the 4-3. The 3-4 was run successfully by a few teams namely the Pittsburg Steelers and the Buffalo Bills during their superbowl runs.

Oh ok then thanks for the information. I think seems as I've set it up naturally I'll go with the 3-4 defensive formation purely basing it on a long term basis, that when the QB'S and WR's finally start making some plays then

The recent Patriots dynasty, too.

I just tried making a 3-4 lineup and made sure that my players were not duplicated etc, and it keeps saying its an illegal formation...whats going on? I had a nose tackler 2 ends, 2 middle linebacker, 2 wide linebacker, 2 free safety and 2 strong saftey or cornerbacks...why isn't this working

You can only have two safeties, I believe?

I once played with two strong SF and one free SF. So that cannot be the problem.

But I don't now why it is not working in your case. My base setup is NT, two DE, two OLB, two ILB, two CB and two SF. Never had any trouble with it beeing illigal.

are any of the positions occupying the same zone on the field other than the LB? two safties left two OLB right etc?

I sometimes put two guys at CB on the same side with two FS's and it does absolutely nothing to slow down the pass... I hope this in some way helps!

no merc, the safety etc were all left and right simultaneously...so that shouldn't be the problem.
