Darn I missed all the fun. I'm not sure how a thread about the difference between the 3-4 and 4-3 defense could turn out so ugly.

I'm sure when Chuck Noll brought out the 3-4, he was originally met with tirades of profanity.

I would think that the 4-3 would be better against the run and a 3-4 better against the pass but I was wondering if it really happens that way in the Grid Iron engine. (I play a 4-3 by the way...)

I may try it during a friendly. I'm always trying different things in a friendly.

Admin have said elsewhere that CBs cover WRs on the flanks and that SFs cover TEs over the middle, basically zone coverage and not man-to-man.
So LBs have no role in pass coverage.
3-4 or 4-3 run defense is probably dependent on the skills of your best seven non-DBs.

Couple of oddities I've noticed:

Pass plays indicate no tacklers.
This has been discussed elsewhere but I've seen no indication from Admin in the forums that this is a flaw in the game engine (i.e. effectivley there are no tackles on pass plays) or its just not reported correctly in the game report.

Tackles by CBs on run plays don't seem to happen, I've not seen any at all by my team.Last edited on 2008-12-04 at 18:46

My guess is that it depends on the speed of your LBs.
If you have 4 fast LBs then 3-4 might work better.
They can get up the line of scrimmage faster, and in theory there should be less chance of a breakaway long run by a RB, plus they should be able to put more pressure on the QB.

I'm new to the game and haven't even played my first game yet, but generally speaking, the OLB would cover the TE through short tosses, but let them by as they go over the middle for the safety to pick up. The OLB then shifts towards looking at the outside runner so that they can make the run stop. This all happens in the span of about 2 seconds... the ROLB often bypasses the TE (If on the left side of the formation) and goes straight for the blitz.

Oh, cornerbacks make tackles alright. They are just not recorded in the Passing game. No flaw whatsoever, just a lack of description I believe.

More later - As I am currently cooking
