But from every strand of evidence, game rating (stars) have only small effects on the game. It is the skill values that determine real performance. a highly rated LB is not as good as a highly skilled LB.

I disagree with that statement. Although I do agree that high primary skills and bpos are the driving factor in performance. This whole discussion about consistency could well explain games folks lose that they think they should have won easily. The starting game rating definitely varies for players week to week (some players more than others). Assuming skills are unchanged and bpos are maxed, then the biggest factor for this would have to be consistency.

the reason people lose when they think they should probably win is the 5% bonus for homefield.

consistency, from my understanding, is only rolled once at the beginning of the game. If so, the inherent randomness factors (the RNG) of the game engine play by play have a greater impact than consistency itself.
consistency is hardly the biggest factor.
main skills >>> RNG >>>>>> everything else combined

Homefield advantage is just one thing. Since consistency varies and is an integral part of the start game rating for every player AND since the start game rating is factored into how your players play each game, then consistency is definitely a factor too. True consistency for the game is only calculated one time, but it's still (one would assume) used in the equation for how each player is going to play. It's not just shelved in the "stat" page for folks to look at with no further meaning. We could debate all day about which of the many random factors have the greatest impact, but I'm not debating that. If I were, I'd choose to say that all the random factors impact the game in ever changing random amounts, but primary skills and bpos lead the way. Weather is a factor and there are various "spice" factors according to the admins. While I've never said consistency is the "biggest factor," it would be silly to discount that as part of the equation
