Some good words of wisdom from the Doc there.

There's quite a fixation with young talented players in this game which has always amazed me considering how long in real time they take to develop even if you have the full facilities.
I've had an alternate (from the norm) view of the game since I started.
Once I realised how the leagues were structured I decided my number one priority was to get promoted to the top division asap. Stadium building came second and young talent a distant third.

Why? Because new human teams start in the low divisions and the higher divisions were mostly full of bots. Bots are much easier to beat than humans. So it's easier to promote now rather than in a few seasons when the higher divs will have more humans and promotion will be much more difficult.

So my priority has been to buy players who would improve my team, especially high BPOS, regardless of their age. Some incredible bargains are available aged 25+ who still have 5 good seasons (thats nearly 2 yrs real time!).
Along the way I've slowly increased the stadium and facilities when funds were available and the next promotion assured. I've been here since season 1 but I won't have full vip+exec seats until my latest construction completes tomorrow! And I've slowly gathered some young talent. Next season I will be in the Top Div.
I'm not claiming the best strategy just showing that there are different
options available for new managers.

Without any question, there are several ways to make it. And congrats for your way through the levels.

The question is: should a starter invest money in new players or not. And IMO there is no other way than preparing finances (= build stadium) in the first weeks. And you can't compare our situation with the current one. When we entered the game in season one you could buy nice guys on the market for 10 or 20k. These times are over.

Well of course you are right, good management must balance finances whatever strategy you choose, and yes a stadium build is a good idea in the first few weeks.
However, good cheap players are available. I've recently sold 2 of my best players who were part of my promotions and last 2 cup runs. Total price for both players 21k! And the reason they were so cheap was because they were 29 and 30 yrs old, but they still have 1 or 2 good seasons left.

Yep a bit +1 to that... as i always say, my views are just that, my views...

I have a personal view not to buy players over 18years old (non over 17yo in the last 5 weeks of the season)

just becasue that is the route i wanted to go... however alot has to be said for the buying of 'veteran' players..

Now that the game is nearing the end of the 4th season, we are seeing a divide between older players and younger players, where as in season 2 most old players had been around as long as alot of the younger players, we now have alot of older players who hadve gone through 4 seasons of training, and are now a much more attractive proposition..

I myself bought an older TE (the only time i broke my own rule lol) for a couple of reasons. and while he does not play many games for me, he does serve a purpose on occasion...

Very helpful discussion, thanks for sharing the 2 opposite views and there are likely many more to find success

I think you can do all three. I am building my stadium up, will have all exec and vip built this offseason. I have bought young talented players for relatively cheap (1-85k each). I have also progressed each season from 5 to 3 for next season. You need a little luck along the way for sure, but if you are willing to commit the time it is possible. I see it as difficult to compete if you ignore any of those three strategies.
