Thanks for the input everyone. I was wondering whether to play the youth in "bot" matches and I'll definitely consider it - however, my first team players are pretty rubbish as well so I want them to get as good as possible as quickly as possible too. Decisons, decisions!

Remember that if you're tied with another team the team that has scored the most points advances. That's why I play my top guys in all league games.

Me too. Young players always have friendlies. Although with me always playing top teams and wanting to see where I stack up, I tend to play starters there.

But playing backups in league games against bots when you know you will or will not promote is always a very good strategy.
