To start with everyone is in it. It is a random draw against other teams from your region(North America, Central Europe, Asia & Africa, etc.). It's basically a playoff between all of these teams, winner advances, loser is done. At the end the winner gets an automatic berth into the AFLC, and everyone who finishes at least in the top 1024 in their region gets prize money(amounts outlined in the FAQ).

There isn't a bracket, each round is randomly generated after the previous round is completed. Because of this, there are also no seeds, so it's completely possible for 2 top teams to play each other early on while a brand new division 5 teams gets a bunch of bots and therefore a chance to advance far into the Cup.
I'm not sure on the exact number of NA teams, but I know that today's games are the round of 1024. So if you're still in it today, you will get prize money at the end of the season no matter how far you go.

Draw for each round is random, all the teams (including bots) in the region play in the first round. Regions with less levels start later with cup competition so the cup finals can be played simultaneously at the end of the season.
Due to the binary system regional cup we have 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048 places in each round.
If the region has:
1 division level: 10 teams in total, 4 rounds required
2 division levels: 40 teams , 6 rounds
3 division levels: 130 teams, 8 rounds
4 division levels: 400 teams, 9 rounds
5 division levels: 1210 teams, 11 rounds
