I wouldn't get it until you have a fully built stadium, fitness center, training facility, and club shop. The youth academy doesn't give you any advantages over the regular youth pull. It just gives more players to choose from. For me, the youth academy is at the bottom of my list.

Save your money on the youth academy. It doesn't give you much and certainly isn't worth the cost.
If you add a youth academy, you get to choose 1 player out of 4 instead of 2. You still only get to choose 1 player though. You still don't get any information on the players. The stats may be slightly better, but no guarantee. The stats will range from 3-6 instead of 2-5.

Fitness Center is good for increasing strength, speed, and stamina and isn't too expensive. Usually, one of the first facilities to get.

Training Hall helps increase all other stats and is very good, but expensive.

Club shop brings in extra income, but is more useful if your in a higher division.

The fitness center and training hall are the first two facilities to get. Fitness center is usually first because it's cheaper and you can increase strength, speed, and stamina without fear of your player's salaries skyrocketing after the season. I plan to wait until I'm about division III or so before I get the club shop. Unless there are drastic improvements to youth academy, I wouldn't waste my money on it at all.

These are just my opinions of the facilities. Other's views may differ.

Great way of putting it

I only have a fitness center and it is worth every cent.

I've never quite understood this, because some of my youth players have skills of 1.

Does that mean that a youth player starts with all one's and then the program selects several "improved" skills that will either be 2-5 or 3-6 with a youth academy.

I agree. I've noticed the same with some 1's in my youth pulls as well. My statement above came from the FAQ.

From FAQ
8. Why do I need the youth academy?
Youth academy increases the number of youth players available to you each week from 2 to 4. The players also have a chance to have higher starting skills than without this facility (skills range from 3 to 6 instead of 2 to 5), but the skill distribution is still random.

So it is likely the FAQ is wrong or at the very least, misleading. Regardless, it's still not enough of an improvement to warrant the high cost of the youth academy IMO.

I think the FAQ's not wrong, you just have to be careful with the interpretation. From what I understand you're not guaranteed a skill between 3-6 BUT if a skill gets increased during the (still random) skill distribution, then it'll be somewhere between 3 and 6, instead of 2 and 5.

So basically you're chances are just increasing. And if the Admins coded correctly, then due to the laws of probability you'll definitely get better youth players.

The question just is: is the degree of "betterness" high enough to justify the investment...

I have a Youth Academy and I'm quite satisfied with it. Maybe I would have been better off by just purchasing better youth players through the transfer market, but I didn't really care about that anyway. I just prefer to assemble a football team via the draft, and not via free agency, so i currently have only 4 players that I bought on the market, all others are from my original team or the YA.

I would like to have a youth academy, but at least for me the price is not worth what I would get. Instead, like junkdre mentioned above, I am spending that $620,000 + 8,000/week on players in the transfer market.

I think just about anyone would do fine without one. You could have the #1 team in GI and never buy a youth academy. I will personally have to see what type of changes the admins decide to make to the youth pull before I decide to buy one.
