With all the talk of people avoiding the passing game I'm curious what the CB does when there isn't a WR positioned on his side.

They stay in their zone. Even though there might not be a WR lined up on his side does not mean that the opposite side WR or TE wont run a route to his side.

Or even that a running play won't come out towards the sideline.
