Surprised not to see a thread here already. I just saw the film, and thought I'd start a thread.

To kick off the discussion, some random thoughts (in case anyone didn't see the title, spoilers ahead).

- Empire Strikes Back is as close to perfection as we'll ever see, but that was a very good film IMO. I might rank it ahead of A New Hope despite nostalgia, and it got me invested in the outcome for two hours where Ep. VII - as the first of three films, which told us right away that Rey and Finn weren't going anywhere - didn't.*

*With one huge exception. RIP Han.

- That was an extremely lifelike film - no qualms about major or secondary characters dying, until and including at the end. Even Ep. III wasn't on the same level, IMO. "And so they died. The end." would make a boring film if it happened 10 minutes in, as it should if probability applied to many films, but I find plot armor - even when it's necessary - mildly annoying. This movie had very little of that.

- Parts of Jedha - especially the tank rolling through a civilian area, subsequent ambush, and insurgency - looked like something straight out of the Iraq War. Show a picture like this (http://bit.ly/2hI87Pl) in a documentary, and I just might miss it. It's a very political film, especially in some of the details (writers' tweets hint at this as well).

- Chirrut was fun to see in action. Can this order of monks please crop up again?

- The SFX behind Tarkin's return in this movie can't get enough praise.

- Vader building a private retreat on Mustafar was a nice touch - the motivation is obvious.

- Haven't read any extended universe books (now a moot point, since they're no longer canon) but I'd imagine Vader had other adventures - could be something to explore.

- The longer look at Yavin Base in this film was interesting. What I really want to see now is a look at the Rebellion's first days - starting where Episode III leaves us (Bail Antilles having just returned home), or shortly after that. I know there are films planned out until 2020, and after that Disney will probably give the franchise a rest, but maybe in 2025?

Was a very good film for me, I actually preferred The Force Awakens to this.

The last third was trememndously but for one thing, without giving too much away, the cgi for one character just didn't look right for me

Enjoyed both but preferred Rogue One. I liked that it was set in the star wars universe but didn't try too hard to be like the originals. The originals exist and I will happily watch them again - I don't need to go to the cinema for it.

i also enjoyed seeing the universe from the perspective from some people of a different power level to the usual main characters. However each to their own as both were good movies.
