United Kingdom 49-31 France

I have long admired the French team, and our meeting in the semi-final could easily have been our demise. However, the switching of Bradley Brind back to cornerback, and the usage of Tyler Matthewson at safety, which was successful against Denmark, again proved to be the final piece in the defensive jigsaw which so nearly unraveled with the demise of Kieran Paul Nelson. But much as I like to focus on defence, the offence stole the show on this day. 65% completion for Man of the Match Corey McMillan, with Stewart Leonard catching 8/11, Rory Gardiner 10/18, and Thomas John Brady 21/28 made it a day to remember. More important was the clutch conversion - two 4th and 5s were converted in one early possession, which resulted in 7 points, and there were five other 3rd down conversions for the UK.

France were in this until the 3rd quarter, which went 14-0 to the UK, and from there it was just a matter of maintaining the gap. It was a pity the French didn't get to add to their silverware collection, being beaten by Austria in the 3rd/4th playoff but there are a lot of 'what-ifs' in this game.

United Kingdom 56-35 Hungary

Hungary surprised a lot of people to reach the finals, although their team has been on the verge of success for quite a while. Their former manager Janos, controversy aside, did some superb groundwork in their first 7 seasons leaving a team in place that was ready to take on the world. However, the finals proved to be a step too far for this gallant side, who found themselves in danger of being hammered by the UK, before a fourth quarter recovery salvaged some pride.

For those interested in catching stats, Stewart Leonard caught 10/15, Rory Gardiner 11/13, and Thomas John Brady 12/21. By the middle of the second quarter it became apparent that this was all but academic, as the UK racked up touchdown after touchdown without reply. Brendan Blackburn's interception, followed by Stewart Leonard's run-in, made the score 42-7, by which time the UK's name was already being etched on the trophy by some. An inevitable Hungarian comeback followed, but the UK's lead was too much, and the fourth World Cup was ours.

There's not much that beats claiming the UK team as being the best in the game, and backing it up with a World Cup win, again. It was almost a year ago I first made that statement, since when the same core of players have gone 34-4, picked up three trophies in a row, and recovered the number one spot in the rankings. They have traumatised several nations with their clutch victories, and I think there may be still a few more seasons of greatness yet to be had.

Anyone for a four-peat?
