Maxing a player out

My QB is 20 pass and 19 vision 4 star talent. In the trainging report it shows a yellow star for vision, he has gone all the way to the end of the training bar twice to go to 20 in vision without attaining it. If it were a red star I would know he is maxed. Am I just wasting my time trying to get to 20 vision or is there a one in three chance at hitting it eventually.

he will get there eventually, the odds of it popping are dependant on his talent

From FAQ

6. What about the player's talent. How does that effect the training?
Talent has no direct influence on training as such. It does however limit how high a player can reach in his skills. If a player has talent;
1 then his maximum is 11
2 then his maximum is 12
3 then his maximum is 13
4 then his maximum is 14
5 then his maximum is 15
6 then his maximum is 16
7 then his maximum is 17
8 then his maximum is 18
9 then his maximum is 19
10 then his maximum is 20

The only 3 exceptions to this rule are speed, strength and stamina. Speed and strength are limited by a hidden maximum value (different for each player) that represents the maximum value player can reach even if he trains with weights each and every day. Stamina is not limited at all, and with extensive physical (fitness) training every player can reach 20 in stamina.
7. Is it possible for a player to go above his maximum?
It is possible, it's just that much harder for the player to achieve that.
If a player is at his maximum then he has 1 in 3 chance to gain a point/level.
If a player is at his maximum + 1 then he has 1 in 5 chance to gain a point/level.
9 then his maximum is 19
If a player is at his maximum + 2 then he has 1 in 10 chance to gain a point/level.
If a player is at his maximum + 3 then he has 1 in 20 chance to gain a point/level.
It is impossible for a player to go more than 4 above his maximum.

I would say his training points would have been better spent on agility, footwork and positioning. That way, passing and vision would increase more slowly, but they'd still have a chance of popping while you work on the secondary skills. Getting a player from 17/18 to 20 is more for show than performance.

Thanks guys, so 1 out of 5 chance to advance, and 0 for 2 so far.
Abcat, I would normally agree with you but he is also 19 cons and 20 int. so I want to squeak out every bit of potential. QB is the only position I would do this to.

I have a few players one over their max, and 2 players 2 over their max.

for me it's normally taken 200 points (2 goes) to raise one over, and then another 300 points (3 goes) to raise that 2 over.

so pretty spot on for the 1 in 3, 1 in 5 scenerios.

I have to say that I've never had an OL player over 15 in any skill and basically my whole OL is 14 top skill. I'm in TD, so it's hard to justify taking their salaries any higher. Pick and choose who you take over 16-17 top skills, there really isn't a bunch of difference. I think there actually is a difference, but I think the randomness of the game more than compensates for this difference

I experimented on this with a few players and logged the performance when I had my first team. I had a couple player increase 1 over max three times without fail... +3 over max. Then I had another that took 4 tries to increase 1 point. His INT was higher than the other 3 three. I think its simply luck of the draw. Most of my stats were about 200-300 for any increase over the max. Did not seem to matter if it was +1 +2 or +3. Average was the same.
