I just joined GI as the Miami Manroids. I have played american football online before but I have a few questions about GI procedures.
1. Currently it states that I have a game to play on Sept 8 vs NH Pats at 9:00. Is this 9 pm or am? Also, is this Miami time or some other time? How do I play NH? Will their coach email me that he is online and ready to play against me ? Or will I be notified by GI that he is online and ready to play?
2. If I wanted to play a game just to practice before my real game on Sept 8 vs NH, can I do this? IF so, please tell me how.

Thanks.

All GI times use the GI clock found on the right side of the blue bar above. You'll have to figure out how that time compares to yours. I'm in Central time zone and game times happen @ 2:00 pm for me.

Games are done on the servers. Neither manager has to be online to play. You set your lineup and game settings (what little there are) by clicking the gray button beside the game in question on the matchups page. There are 3 tabs for each game, offense, defense, & orders. Be sure to complete all 3. The be sure to click the submit lineup button. If you don't click submit lineup, nothing will be saved. Once you've done this, the gray button beside the game will turn green. Remember, a green button only means that you've submitted a lineup for that game. It doesn't mean it's a legal lineup, so double check after training on Friday morning to make sure you don't have any injured players in your lineup.
GI is more of a management style game rather than arcade style like Madden. The tactics are simple, and there are some problems with the game engine that are supposed to be worked out eventually.

Read through the Help/FAQ. While this information is accurate for the most part, there have been some changes that have not been included in the FAQ. Also, several of the sticky threads in "rookies" forum has some good information to help new managers.
Check out these threads for sure
Announcement : PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!
Announcement : A Few Game Engine Breakthroughs
Sticky : Spilling the Beans

And since the off-season will be coming up in a couple of weeks this thread has relevance soon.
Sticky : Guide through the offseason

Yes, some of these threads are very old and have no new posts for some time, but very little if any changes have been made since then, so they are still accurate for the most part.
Also, feel free to ask questions on the forum. Many are more than willing to help.

Welcome to GI.

I thought I would stick a new question in this forum. What are the thoughts for a new club in training up the speed/strength in regards to focusing one one area vs. the all areas? I know there is a penalty for focusing on one area and part of me hates taking a penalty hit but part of me says I would rather focus on speed or strength and not worry about stamina so much. Do most of you focus that training and take the penalty or use all skills to maximize the training value?

I almost always focus train. But then that's the only way for a non-supporter to find caps. I think I'd focus train anyway though.
If you don't have coaches and training facilities, I'd probably stick will training all skills in the group. Your training points are so small that they barely have any affect either way. You might as well make use of every point you can. Of coarse, if you focus train, your pt loss is next to nothing as well.

If you dont have a supporter account focus train the physicals if you have coaches and fitness center maxed out. You can use the training skill formula to guess if your player's physicals are maxed out.
Get your coaches/fitness center only after you have at least built all the vip and at least 1/2 the executive seats.
Build on the side from which you get the least revenue.

But before you have coaches etc, there is not a lot of benefit in focus training
