Just been looking at some of the top teams around the world and most have about 45-50+ players on the roster ?????
Why would you need so many ?
It must cost a fortune in wages.....
I have just 30 at present, but could probably cope ok with one less than that...... and I still have a few that rotate or play a different position in a friendly

They will be developing younger players so they don't have a big hit of players losing form or retiring.

I have a least 1 spare in every position. And more if come across good talent or have multiple older players near retirement age/s.
Doesn't cost a mint. Having 10 players with skills 7 or lower will cost about $30K per week (3% of my total wages). So with a good sized stadium, it is not an issue.

for the most part backups matter only when you are a title contender

I think the squad size depends heavily on the situation of your team and on your team philosophy.
Drafting youthplayers and therefore securing your teams future is One way, buying totally developed Players is another.
