Hey i joined up last week and it's been a bit of a startled deer in headlights since then I was wondering what attributes, apart from talent and consistency, that I needed to look for in players so that I can start to build up my team and start winning leagues

You need to train physicals and figure out where to put players from there.. At first, compromises are fine, but heres what I looked for when I started out looking for talents:
DE: 17+ spd/str
DT: 17+ str
OLB: 17+ spd/15+ str
MLB: 17+ int/spd/str
CB: 17+ spd
SF: 17+ int/spd/str
At key positions its nice to have 4,5+ talent, such as QB, MLB and SF, but WR/TE would also be a nice spot to put one or two
Cons you have to figure out yourself, theres alot of different opinions on where to have high cons players.. Basically a player with 1 cons will perform either 20% above or below his level and a 20 cons will play at level all the time.. Many like high cons on the aforementioned key positions. Others dont really care, and some are in between - a little spice doesnt hurt
You will find that high talent with high cons are really expensive.. You can pick up the same player with low cons vs. a 17+ cons for less than 1/5 usually, so at first I suggest you dont aggonize too much about cons, rather get good talent.. Positions where it wouldnt hurt very much with low cons are on the OL/DL and I like it on OLB too, but as I said, you need to make up your mind on this yourself

High intelligence for QB, MLB, and SF. High consistency for QB and PK at the very least. High talent for all.
Train speed and strength to find maximums. Then put high strength players at OL and DL. High speed players at WR, CB, and SF. For TE, RB, and LB, I like a fairly equal mix with TE and RB favoring slightly higher speed and LB favoring slightly higher strength.
Any other important skills for any position can be trained. Once you know where you want the players, train the skills for their positions and play them at those positions as much as possible.
