Apologies in advance if I've got this wrong, but ...... I'm sure that I read somewhere that there is a "transfer fee" of $2500 or $3500 for selling a player ? If that is true, why do people sell players for $1000, surely it would be cheaper to just fire them rather than pay the listing fee ? or am I missing something obvious here ......

Do you still pay the listing fee if the player doesn't get sold (because nobody bids for him) ???

No. Only if he is sold.
You pay the listing fee at the moment you place a player...
...and if not sold, the listing fee is gone...

Sometimes in the case of a very developed player that is being let go due to wage control people list them for $1000 (ie cheap) so that anybody in the market for a new starter in that position can easily grab him. If no on wants him and no one takes him off your hands, then fire him. At that sort of stage, a $2500-$3500 deficit is hardly anything and you've helped or tried to help someone out.
