Importance of KR, Gunner, Kicker?

Is this game like real football in that you would play your better players on offence or defence first then let your scrubs play special teams? Also, from what I have read it does not seem that the role of kicker is very important

he isn't that important, but sometimes he is needed like in real football -> sometimes a 40 yard fieldgoal can be game deciding.
