Train fitness first - until they reach their caps (strength, speed, stamina don't contribute to the wage calculation) then build the skills a player needs (can be found in the sticky "Please Read This Before Doing Anything Else" thread). If you switch skill every time one gains a point then the wages will rise more slowly - as the highest skill has the biggest impact on wages (so a player with 10 in two attributes will cost less than one with a 12 and an 8 in the same two)

This is a quite good guide for the development of your players.

In addition to that, first develop your player's physical (speed, strength, stamina) in order to see at what point they cap. (excl. QB)

After that develop the primary skills as they are stated in the Rookie Guide. At this point, you have to decide whether you are developing the primaries to a certain level (e.g. 5 and then to 10...) or you balance your players skills for the specific position in primaries AND secondaries(e.g. OL: blocking, footwork, agility...).
But the effect of both ways in the game is still being discussed and i think, there's still no consensus which way is the best for performing better (besides the fact, that the first way increases the wages much faster, sometimes combined with not developing the physicals).

So, i would recommend to develop physicals first, then balance your players skills from one skill level to the next and focus on your financials first.

Heres the salary curve:

Skill / Wage

1 500
2 800
3 900
4 1300
5 2400
6 2700
7 3200
8 4800
9 6600
10 9000
11 13000
12 17100
13 22300
14 28900
15 37300
16 46800
17 57800
18 70600
19 85400
20 102200

That means that at the end of the season the highest skill you have is chosen and then wages are based on that..

Good players with low wages would be trained in many secondary skills, since it doesnt matter (much) whether you have one or five skills at a certain level, the wage will be the same (almost).. So a new team could pick 7 as their optimal, then train 3-4 skills you believe matters to that level, then go for 10-11 and so forth until you decide you dont want them any better (could be level 15 for a DL etc).. Ask if you need help deciding what skills are important, after you have read the link Endever posted

To sum up:

Train multiple skills and not just one skill, VERY important for a strong team!!!
