I'm sure this is posted somehwere, but couldn't find (105 pages!)

... which is generally better in the game, 4-3 or 3-4 ... obviously gearing the players with some 'common sense' for the different roles... or is this even necessary

whichever you have better players for! if you have 4 good LBs then go 3-4 if not the go 4-3 inside linemen dont do much in this game...

An important point for your decision is, whether you have two Middle linebacker with equal Ingame-Ratings (BPOS, skills etc.) or not.

For the 3-4 you've to play with two MLBs. And as it is with all positions that can be set with two players on one spot (CB, WR, LB), this choice doesn't increase the strength of that spot.
So, if you have two MLBs with different ratings, the engine chooses one MLB for each play randomly. If you have two good MLBs, it's fine. If not, it's not

So, as Monkey stated, take your best players, but take care of this fact.

There seems to be a trend towards the 5-3-3....not saying I'm endorsing it, but you might look into that idea too.

and what is better when the opponent plays running- 4-3 or 3-4 or 3-3-3 with 2 SS? MLB needs to be more speed or strong?
I noticed that he might have max s + s = 35. What are the ideal proportions strengh and speed?

First, it depends on your roster. Always make sure, that your best players are on the field!

Generally, strong safeties are better than free safties to stop the run. For defending all-run I prefer two strong safeties left and right. Four LBs only if you have two equal MLBs (and you have to fill up your defense).

So, for defending the running game: 2 SS, 2 CB, min. 3 LBs, min. 3 DL. There's only one spot left, that you can use. Either you decide on who is the next best player (DL, LB, SF) or you take a additional FS for pass defense.

(Besides that, I'm not sure about the efficiency of 2 SS + 1 FS)

If your opponent is running and you have a decent team you start to hehe Id say get a MLB with 15+ speed and 17+ str, but of course 18+ in both are to prefer since you can make use of 17/18 on the new engine.. OLB I prefer faster, but I guess all it means is 18/17 instead

Dont ever play 2 SS, its just plain bad, rather a FS and a SS.. Run stopping should never be a priority since a well developed team will kill the run without even focusing on it.. And why would you play 3 CB's against the run???
