Basically running the ball works against bots, which are most of your competition in Div V and Div IV. There are a few teams that still see success with the running game into Div III, but it will become more difficult to run as you move further up the ladder. Passing is generally considered the most effective way to score against humans, whether in Div V or in Top Division.

Regarding defense, it is widely taken that offense rules over defense as you progress up the ladder. Therefore, focusing your efforts on defense may not be as successful as you would presume. I wish it was different, but that is what seems to be the case at this point in the games development.
