Hello all,

Since I am finishing Uni this Summer, I have been asked to coach/manage my brothers football (Soccer!) team. My brother is 12, and will be 13 when the season starts in Autumn. Now, I am only 20 years of age, and although I think I know a lot, I probably do not know a lot

Just wondered if anyone here has got any experience with coaching/managing young children? I know that there is a few of you who coach American football at older ages, but still feel free to give your advice and opinions.

Andy.

How did you go about helping the team? What did you do after your team losed a game? etc etc

We lost many games...The youngsters learned to deal with that, this was not a big issue here. My personal job was special training for goalie and the technical aspect of shooting, standard situations...but I was not their psycho

The most difficult part about coaching kids is dealing with the kids' parents

"Why isn't Johnny playing more"

"Billy is better than Sammy, shouldn't he be playing there"

"Tommy should be playing goalie"

etc, etc, etc

Set clear rules. Inform both players and others involved (parents...) of the rules. Stick to them. Be consistant in your approach both with regards to the team rules and how you give feedback, how you coach. If you are predictable, they'll understand what you're all about and what they can expect you to tolerate and not to tolerate, what you will do and what you won't do.

Also, it's important to remember that every player is an individual that might need feedback given a little bit different from the player next to them. There's no conflict between that and being consistant Last edited on 2009-05-18 at 11:09
