Hi all. I'm wondering if I've misunderstood the way the offensive match orders work. In my NT game vs Hungary today I had the following settings in place:

On 4th down punt or attempt a field goal If distance < 50 yards
Unless yards left <=30 On 4th and 5

If you look at our final possession of the game, we were 30 yards from goal, and on 4th and 3. Given the settings above I'd have expected us to run with it, but instead a field goal was attempted (and missed). Can anyone explain why this happened?

3rd-3-UNI70 Pass Alex Moran pass incomplete to Ben Hornett.
Field goal Harrison Hooper missed a 47 yard field goal.

Bit of a shame, as it meant we missed out on the chance of a game-tying touchdown

I assume the field position is tracked in one or more decimal places and rounded (or possibly truncated) when displayed.
If this is correct then the distance to the endzone was slightly more than 30 yards, and your orders were executed correctly.

the field goal post is not placed on the goal line but inside the endzone. Furthermore the kicker is not kicking where the ball is placed on engagement. so both this facts makes it a longer fieldgoal than the 30 yards you would have to run to the endzone. So now you will know to add 17 yards to every fieldgoal attempt.

Yes am fully aware of the +17 rule for field goals, so with the first part of my orders set to <50 I'd expect a field goal to be attempted only for fourth downs where we're closer than 33 yards to the end zone.

However..... for me, the wording of "yards left" in the second part of the orders suggests yards to the end zone rather than 'the adjusted distance for a field goal attempt'. If it is in fact the latter, then to have my team run on 4th with 30 yards to go I'd presumably need to set Unless yards left <=50, which doesn't quite feel right, but maybe that is how it works.

There seems to be some uncertainty on this even in the two responses above - can anyone confirm for definite how this works?

In fact having checked the FAQ, it explicitly says that you should set it if you want "to run the ball if the distance towards the opponents end zone is less than x yards on 4th" - so reading this I'm convinced we should have run on that final play, unless simpathia's rounding theory is correct.

Not sure what happened as i would have expected you to run going by the instructions you had set. The add 17 yard rule should only come in to play for FG attempts if you require more than 5 yards on your 4th down and you are not more than 33 yards away.

I have my orders set for to attempt a FG if less than 40 yards but to run on 4th down if less than 40 yards on 4th and 2.

You can see in my match vs the Gnomes "Edinburgh vs Gnomes" with roughly 5 mins left in the 1st quarter that i am 4th and 2 with 35 yards remaining. Because my orders are set to run on 4th down if 40 yards or less on 4th and 2 i try and run and get stopped. The position of the posts should have no bearing on the distance to the end zone.

Simpathia's reasoning sounds the most likely explination but to me if the engine says 30 yards then your 30 yards not 30.4 or whatever, surely that would show as 31 yards.

I dont know what happened there FFB

You never go 10 yards without making first down so there's no way this engine plays to a decimal point on yardage

Suspect its going to be a bug that nobody has noticed before and won't ever get fixed

I wonder if it's just a syntax thing, and despite the dropdown selection saying "<=30" it actually does "<30" (ie. it has be be less than 30, which would explain why we didn't run on 30 but perhaps would have done if it was 29?)
Just an idea.....

There is no point in having a decimal point on yardage when it is never ever used for anything.
I do not believe my own suggestion

I vote for this one, seems like a perfectly reasonably explanation.
I guess everybody is now looking for more examples?

- only thing is the orders seems to be executed too early (or orders should have been <31).

This game is all about decimals - a lot of them, but all or most of these decimals are cut, before showing the numbers to us.

Reason for the confusion here, could be admin got things a bit wrong, when he wrote the orders.

If the distance is controlled before decimals are cut, orders should be <31.

If the check is done after cutting, orders can be both - in this case <=30 is as good as <31.

My guess is admin picked a mix of the two.
