Formations. Mean. Nothing.

In today's game against Spain. I knew they would run 90% of the time on each down. To counter this, I set up my Irish side with 5 linemen, 5 linebackers & 1 Strong Safety. No cornerbacks, as there was no need to defend the pass. I can accept Spain are marginally better personnel wise than Ireland, so my idea was to counter this by positioning 11 players essentially in the box to defend their running game.

It proved futile, as Spain ran for 550 yards and scored 45 points. I don't mind losing to Spain, as they are probably a top 5 team, but I don't know what else I could have done to affect the outcome of this game, apart from changing what players play. I knew formations weren't all that important in the outcome of games, but this practically proves they have zero impact.

Hungary tried the same tactic against the Danish team today with similar result.

Since we don't know anything or much about the engine and how a player is selected for tackling or coverage, I would rather play a 3-3-5 defence against the run and thereby reducing the 'risk' that a marginal player might be selected for the tackle. But how the tackling is calculated, eg. how many yards the HB will gain / loose before being tackled is a mistery and I see no evidence in the game reports that can support any 'optimal' formation.

`They screwed up by taking the safeties out of the game, they should be able to make tackles for loss the same as linebackers, they are basically useless, also the run game should have fumbles for turnovers, to equal things out.

No good adding in more player to one position unless all are equal.

The engine will still select 1x DL, 2x LB and 1x SF to test for tackles.

If one of those extra players is of less quality than your original 4-3 starters, then you made your defense weaker.
