Why is GI considered a pass first game?

I've seen that the pass is the main thing that matters in this game pretty much everywhere. Yet even when I look at some of the best teams in the game, their starting running back has like three times the amount of yards on the ground that their starting QB has in the air.

Can someone explain to me the thought process?

For years the only viable way to win was to pass. A while back they made some changes to make the run game work better. I'm guessing you're either looking at old posts or older guys like me who have been slow to believe that we don't just have to pass all the time.

Because admins screwed up some algorithms and they're too busy to fix it... for 10 years.

The end.

I like to run and pass, since they made the changes, this makes a lot of sense. Sometimes I will go all pass, well 90% and sometimes 90% run. Think carefully about the benefits, there are several very important benefits, but it's a managerial decision in the end.

Yes, for literally 25 seasons passing was ten times more effective than rushing, and now rushing has been buffed to a point where it's actually marginally better than passing.

Most of the teams are still adapted more to the passing game though, so it's very dependant on whether they've found or trained a good full back, as to whether their running game will work out or not.

Unless you make a good defense.

I think that many coaches looked at their team and evaluated if they had sufficient players to mount a change from passing to running. I was one of those and have had mild success changing from passing to running. I still hang on to a decent TE and WR just in case I feel the urge to switch for a game, but running works for my team (this season), but some teams - like last seasons AS&E champs are struggling to get a running game going. Same might happen to me next season.

My main reason for running is because running involves fewer high-skilled players. I can focus on 5 OL, a FB and be done. Your HB can be a gnome with a sprained knee and a patch covering both eyes and he will still run decently. Just look at this match where my 'Man without vision and skills' backup HB carved through my opponent (yes, they where defending the pass). Playing the passing game requires 5 OL, FB, QB and then a range of skilled recievers. There was a time when 'Dark-winging' would isolate one reciever, say your 100k WR on the right side, but know, I see more passes going to the other recievers as well.

So bottom line - it's all about the money.

And in regards to defence, then certian players have bigger roles than others and then it is just about reading your opponent, neglecting the information you gained and play the best defence, you can muster. Best players in critical positions. DE, MLB and SS/FS.

Train your players correctly and they will make you succeed, but this is a strange game.

Look, I'll just say it. When predominantly running, there is very little chance of throwing interceptions, which when all passing, there will be games when your awesome QB throws up 3 or 4 INTs and it kills you. Also, there is very little chance of getting a QB pressure or sack when running, because you're only passing 10% of the time. There is zero chance of these when running. A solid defense will put up 8-12 pressures/sacks per game and you just took that right off the table by running. Lastly and most obviously, opponents have to choose defending pass or run, not 50% of the time on each down, but 100% of the time on each down. The offense can choose anywhere from run 10% to run 90% and the same for passing. If you choose anything between say 30% and 70%, then a good portion of the time, your opponent will be in the wrong defense to stop you, providing yet another bonus. If you have time to develop a run game, it's what the game allows for since they made the changes a few seasons back. The only caveat is that sometimes the run game is wildly inconsistent and little explanation as to why. All you can do is experiment and see what works best for you. With all that said, a solid passing game still works quite well, so why not mix it up

What you can save salary-wise at WR/TE with a running-based attack is likely countered by needing higher salary OL (and DL on the defense side) across the board. With a passing attack you an get away with having the OG's having a lower salary. A rushing attack seems to want more balanced skills across the OL to work most effectively.

Likewise on defense you can get away with playing $3-4K DT's against a full passing attack, whereas against a rushing attack more skill (and salary) is needed there. Additionally, against a rushing attack you cannot hide a trainee at SS/C like you can against a passing attack. That means more salary.

Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be a consistent way to stop the rushing attack. You can certainly slow it down some, but if you guess pass defense and your opponent rushes all game you are probably going to get blown out.
