Russia vs. Slovenia Match Report

The Slovenian NT was always faced with a near impossible task in getting anything against Russia, one of the group's favourites. Slovenia got off to a good start taking an early 14-0 lead, however the weak Slovenian D was unable to stop the Russian attack from putting up 21 unanswered points. Meanwhile the Slovenian attack stalled on many drives. They managed to score 2 more TDs in the game but it was much too little and too late. Overall, a 17pt victory for the Russians wasn't quite a true reflection of the game, but they certainly deserved to win by at least 2 scores.

Questions may be asked of Coach Phiba's decision to start Eddie Skočaj over former starter Jure Pavlin, but ultimately Slovenia's future lies in the hands of the Shankers' starting QB.

Erik Jeršič had a disappointing 1st game for Slovenia, he hauled in a 71 yard TD in the 1st quarter but was relatively quiet afterwards, finishing with 9 receptions from 14 targets and 161 yards.

The Slovenian special team players were terrible today. The Russian kick returners were allowed to gain far too many yards on returns leading to Russia starting a fair few drives around midfield. Meanwhile Slovenia had a few drives from inside their own 20.

Still there were positives to take from the game.

Zdravko Šolar hauled in 12 receptions from 19 targets for 222 yards and 2 TDs.

Defensive ends, Renato Vidic and Patrik Žibert both had 4 pressures on the QB. This was especially impressive from Vidic in his first NT game.

In summary, the Slovenia NT knows that their offense will have to play much better to keep them in games going forward. The D is not of the highest standard so the offense needs to put up more points. Slovenia expect to see Erik Jeršič show the world what he is capable of in their next game. Also if Vidic and Žibert can turn some of those pressures into sacks then the Slovenia D will be helping as much as they can.

Next up is Slovenia's first home game of the campaign vs. Canada on 26.09.14

Slovenia vs. Canada Match Report

In front of a crowd of 104,500, Edvard Skočaj made his home debut for the Slovenian NT. The young Shankers' QB did not disappoint. He took onboard Coach Phiba's comments after the round 1 loss and had a great game scoring a QB rating of 134.18. Eddie threw 7 TDs passes with a completion percentage of 57.1%

Erik Jeršič also had a better performance with 191 yards and 2 TDs, but more is still expected of Slovenia's star TE in future games.

Offensive performance of the match was awarded to Zdravko Šolar who hauled in 17 receptions from 21 targets and recorded 337 yards and 5 TDs.

The Slovenia defense also upped it's game in front of the home fans. Patrik Žibert recorded his first sack of the campaign as well as 2 pressures on the Canadian QB. Renato Vidic also recorded another 4 pressures. However, the defensive performance of the match goes to Mihael Lunder of former Iron Bowl Champions Wilhelmshaven SeaWolves. Lunder had an important interception at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. He returned it for 18 yards putting Slovenia at the 50 yard line and allowing them to go up by 28-7. Lunder is trying to ensure that he has not been forgotten. A few more performance like that and his name could well go down in GI history.

While the jubilant Slovenian players won't be concerned about the negatives tonight, there is still a lot of work to be done and improvements to be made to ensure that Slovenia qualify for World Cup XII.

Thanks

Yeah it was a pleasing result.

I've played Cityboy 3 times now and they've always been hard games to call.

If Slovenia can get a result against Moran next week, then Group F will be looking very interesting

You can do Slovenia a favour if you like and tell your players to just watch next Friday

I'm looking forward to it and it'll also be interesting to see how Canada get on against Russia.
